Family Info Retired from 39 years in banking; Chappaqua resident with a son and daughter who are graduates of HGHS and each played multiple sports.
Athletic Background Three sport athlete at Riverdale Country School; played basketball as a freshman at Fordham University.
Why did you decide to coach sports? Recently retired from a career in banking, I have always had a passion for the game and HGHS needed a freshman coach.
What is the most rewarding / fun thing for you about coaching? Seeing players develop over the course of their high school careers. Also, recognizing talent that may not be obvious to others.
Fun fact you would like to share I was the first player at Riverdale to score more than 1,000 points, finishing career with more than 1,400 points (prior to the 3-point shot)

Boys Basketball Falls in Sectional Semifinal to Mount Vernon
by Matty Wasserman ‘21
Wednesday, February 28-- The Greeley Quakers Boys Varsity Basketball team was ready for the biggest basketball game the school had played in 14 years.  They were ready to face the Mount Vernon Knights, the defending state champions, who were heavy favorites to win this year’s Class AA title. And they were ready to try and take down Mount Vernon’s experienced and battle-tested team, with a 20-2 record, who would not be fazed when the lights came on and the pressure ramped up. Despite winning their league with a 16-5 record, and cruising through the first two postseason games with a 63-45 win over Arlington and a 55-41 win vs. Suffern, Greeley still walked into the Westchester County Center as the heavy underdog.

A huge turnout by Greeley gave the feel of Quaker home game, and the atmosphere was electric from the students throughout the game, and especially early when Greeley got off to a hot start. However, after the early Quaker lead, Mount Vernon notched a 7-0 scoring run. Greeley’s senior sharpshooter Greg Karr ended the run when he connected on a long 3-pointer, his first of four in the first half. Mount Vernon also had an abysmal eight turnovers in the first quarter, and Greeley capitalized on it with three consecutive made 3-pointers. The first quarter ended in a 21-13 Quaker lead, which was unexpected by most.

Greeley had all of the momentum in the game after scoring first in the second quarter, but Mount Vernon responded with a rapid nine points in under two minutes to take the lead for the first time in the game. However, the trio of Brandon Gecaj, Jeremy Block, and Chris Melis kept Greeley in the game throughout the second quarter with their excellent inside scoring, and the score was deadlocked at 41-41 at the end of the first half.

Greeley got off to a hot start in the second half, with back to back and-one layups from Gecaj and Block. However, Mount Vernon begun to take over the game with their dominant offensive rebounding, and a successful full court press that Greeley had trouble breaking. Just when things seemed to be getting out of hand for the Quakers, Greg Karr re-entered the game, and so did his unconcious shooting. He connected on two more triples, to make him 7/9 from behind the arc. After the high scoring and streaky third quarter, Greeley only trailed 70-63.

The Quakers appeared to still have some hope left with seven minutes remaining in the game, but that quickly vanished when the Knights scored eight consecutive points in less than a minute. From that point on the game was not in question, and Mount Vernon came out on top by a final score of 91-80.

It has been an extremely successful inaugural season for head coach Felix Nicodemo, and it has been an excellent season of Greeley basketball. Although the Quakers will lose four senior starters, there will still be a solid core in place for next season’s team, who will look to sustain and build on the successes of the 2017-18 season.

Boys Varsity Basketball Wins 3rd Straight Over Scarsdale
by Matty Wasserman ‘21
Monday, December 18th -- The Greeley Quakers Varsity basketball team aimed for their third straight win at home against the Scarsdale Raiders, who came into the game ranked 4th in the Lower Hudson Valley by Greeley’s 11-2 first quarter run resembled the previous two games, in which they dominated Carmel and R.C. Ketcham. However, the hot shooting for the Quakers did not last long and Scarsdale answered back with a 9-0 run of their own early in the second quarter. The streaky opening of the game evened out in the latter part of the half, and Scarsdale took a 27-25 lead into intermission.

Greeley again got off to a fast start in the third quarter with a 9-0 run propelled by 3-pointers from Brandon Gecaj and Noah Shar. Neither team was able to break open the game, but the Quakers were able to establish a five point lead with just under 4:00 to play. The game intensified as Scarsdale tied the score up at 39 all with 1:15 to play. With 38 seconds to go, Brandon Gecaj came through with a crucial “and-one” breakaway layup, off the assist from Jeremy Block. After a huge defensive stand, Greg Karr hit two clutch free throws to seal the game for Greeley, who would come away with a 44-39 victory.

The Quakers will look to build on their three game win streak on the road on Wednesday, vs. John Jay – East Fishkill

Boys Varsity Basketball Falls In Home Opener
by Matty Wasserman ‘21
December 6th - The Greeley Quakers boys varsity basketball team came out to take on the Arlington Admirals in their season home opener. The Quakers got off to a fast start thanks to the red hot shooting of Gregory Karr, who hit three 3-pointers within the first four minutes of the game. Karr would finish the game with 25 points, including five 3-pointers and a perfect 8/8 on free throws. Arlington was gaining momentum towards the end of the second quarter; however, captain Jeremy Block attacked the rim and made multiple key layups to keep the score close. The Quakers held a 37-36 lead at the half.

Neither offense was able to get much going at the opening of the second half. However, as the third quarter wore on, the Admirals appeared to be pulling away yet again. A three pointer from Ryan Sullivan put life back in the Quakers, and Greeley only trailed by three points entering the fourth quarter.

Greeley fought hard to stay in the game in the fourth quarter, led by Christopher Melis’ eight point fourth quarter effort. Nonetheless, Arlington’s persistent three-point shooting proved to be the difference late in the game. With under two minutes to play, the Admirals hit a three-point bank shot as the shot clock expired, deflating the Quakers comeback, and Greeley ultimately fell short 72-68.

On the bright side, the JV squad prevailed 64-54 led by Christoph Sauerborn (20 points) and Sean Dunleavy (11).

The Quakers are back on the road Friday to face North Rockland at 6:15pm. The JV game will start at 4:30pm.

Boys JV Basketball Following Varsity's Footsteps; Generates 19 Point Win vs. Yorktown
by Mason Greenstein ‘21
January 31st, 2018-- The Horace Greeley JV boys basketball team played against Yorktown in their second meeting this season. The Quakers were coming into the game with a 3 game win streak and were looking to stay hot. When the game started, both teams came out aggressive on offense. With the help of Greeley's sophomore captain Sean Dunleavy's 7 points the first quarter ended at a close 20-18 Greeley lead. Greeley's defense came to life in the second quarter, only letting Yorktown score 8 more points. As halftime arrived, Greeley held a dominant 35-26 lead.

In the 3rd quarter began, Greeley's offense impressed with the help of sophomore, Jack Fitzgerald, who put up 6 points. Greeley's defense continued to be dominant holding the Cornhuskers to 9 points in the third quarter where Greeley upped their lead to 51-37. The Quakers superior play continued in the fourth quarter. With Greeley's impressive offense and defensive rebounds, they walked away with a 66-47 win.

The Quakers will look to continue their 4 game win streak on February 5th at Scarsdale HS. Tip off is scheduled for 4:30 PM.

Mahopac Edges Boys JV Basketball in Close Game
by Matty Wasserman ‘21
Saturday, January 20 -- The Greeley Quakers boys JV basketball team looked to rebound from a tough 53-45 loss at the hands of Ossining when they took on the Mahopac Indians, in the two teams only meeting of the season. Greeley, who came into the game with a 7-3 record, got off to a red hot start from the field, putting up 22 points in the first quarter. Greeley’s large margin on the offensive glass, led by freshman Matthew Crowe, kept the Quakers out in front throughout the first half. Although Greeley was playing shorthanded due to injury, the Quakers still managed to lead the game by 9 points at the half.

Both teams hit some shots in the early portion of the third quarter, but then three consecutive baskets by Mahopac put the Indians within one score of Greeley. However, Quakers guard Ben Troob responded with a corner 3-pointer to put Greeley back up by 5. Mahopac appeared to have all the momentum after tying the game up at 47, but Carter Salore promptly knocked down his fourth 3-pointer of the game to put Greeley back in the lead. However, Mahopac’s offensive outburst along with Greeley’s sloppy turnovers in the closing minutes put the Indians up 5 points with just one minute to play. From there, Mahopac iced the game by converting on 7-of-8 late free throws, and they ultimately came away with the 64-58 win.

After playing back to back games, Greeley will have a six day layoff before looking to avenge their two game skid at home vs. Fox Lane.

Boys JV Basketball Suffers First Setback of the Season
by Mason Greenstein ‘21
Monday, December 18 --The Horace Greeley Quakers JV boys basketball team took on Scarsdale in the HGHS Main Gym for the first time this season. The Quakers started off a bit slow, only scoring a total of 9 points in the first quarter compared to Scarsdale’s 17 points. Greeley came out fighting in the second quarter reducing the lead to 4, as sophomore, Ben Troob scored a quick 4 points. However, Scarsdale’s tough and strong defense held Greeley off from closing the gap too much. At halftime Greeley was down 26-18.

When the 3rd quarter began the Quakers started to mount a comeback, with the help of team captain Christoph Sauerborn who put up 7 points in the quarter. As the 3rd quarter came to a close, Greeley was only down 36-33, and it looked as if Greeley would have momentum going into the 4th. The 4th quarter looked promising at first as freshman Matthew Crowe put up 8 points, but unfortunately the offense from Scarsdale made it a fight to the finish. The Quakers would not come up with a win this time. The final score: Scarsdale 55, Greeley 48.

The Quakers will look for their next win on Wednesday the 20th at John Jay High School - East Fishkill . Tipoff is scheduled for 4:30PM.

Freshman Boys Basketball Falls in White Plains Rematch
by Mason Greenstein ‘21
January 22, 2018 - The Horace Greeley freshman boys basketball team hosted White Plans in their second meeting this season. Both teams showed some great defense early on, and it lead to a slow first quarter. The first quarter ended tied at a mere 9-9. Dylan Andersen, a big help in the first quarter, put up 5 of the Quakers 9 points. During the second quarter, both teams still dominated defensively and like the first, it was a low scoring quarter. As the teams headed into the locker room, Greeley was down 16-13.

The Quakers came out strong in the third quarter and tied the game early with a deep 3 by Zach Eichenberg. The Quakers offense continued to impress, however, White Plains was able to answer each Greeley score. This resulted in Greeley being down 27-25 heading into the fourth quarter. Needless to say, the fourth quarter was quite intense as both teams had a chance at victory. Greeley was able to force the Tigers into missed shots and snag many defensive rebounds to take a 32-31 lead early in final quarter. Both teams continued to put up points but with 2 minutes left, Greeley was down 41-36. Unfortunately Greeley was not able to make a comeback and the final score was White Plains 48, Greeley 38.

The Quakers will look to bounce back from this tough loss on Wednesday the 24th at New Rochelle HS.
