October 2017: Field Hockey Falls in Sectional Final
contributed by Bill Neff
The underdog Field Hockey team, coming off a dramatic double overtime, double penalty shot win over arch rival Fox Lane on Monday, flew high through the first 29 minutes of the first half against Mamaroneck in the Sectional Finals and dominated action but did not score. In the final minute of play in the first half, Elizabeth Brissette of Mamaroneck would attempt Mamaroneck's first shot and it skipped in. The wind came out of Greeley's sails. In the second half, a penalty shot was called early, Mamaroneck converted and never looked back en route to a 5-0 win.
It is hard to say what if when you lose by that lopsided a score but one can only imagine what would have happened if HG instead were leading Mamaroneck at halftime instead of trailing on one shot. But that is sports and if one less shot had been turned away by HG goalie Willa Kuhn vs. Fox Lane maybe then their season would have ended that day. With the loss today, Greeley finishes 16-3-1, matching the 2015 mark achieved by many of these same girls, the best Greeley mark in a long time and ending again at the hands of Mamaroneck. So, melancholy reigns but when they reflect and realize all they achieved, to be the 3rd best team of 50 in the Section, win a league title and reach the Sectional Finals, they will realize how much they have achieved.
October 2017: Field Hockey Prevails Over Fox Lane In Shootout, Advances to Sectional Championship Wednesday
Horace Greeley's Field Hockey team set three goals for their team this year. Win the League. Did that. Beating Fox Lane. Second box, check. Win the Sectional Finals: Standing in the way--arch rival, Fox Lane, again.
In a game for the ages that included 60 minutes of regulation time, two 10 minute overtime sudden death periods of reduced 7 on 7 play (field hockey is normally 11 on 11) and then two rounds of 5-shot shootouts, the girls emerged victorious behind the stellar goalie play of Willa Kuhn.
Despite three penalties including two simultaneously creating an 11 on 9 advantage for Fox Lane, Greeley got on board first just over 10 minutes into the first half when Lauren Neff tipped in a Fiona Grant blast from 12 yards out. The lead held up until Fox Lane's All State forward Kayla Gallagher went coast to coast to tie it at 1 with 6:53 left on the clock. Regulation ended and although Greeley dominated overtime with many corners, it remained 1-1, and the teams headed to the shootout.
In the first 5 shot shootout, each team found the goal twice, with Nikki Potter and Grant scoring for Greeley. Unlike soccer where it then goes player by player, field hockey continues with another group of five shooters. In the second shootout, Potter, Grant each scored to start, while Senior Kuhn stood tall, stoning the first three Fox Lane shooters for the allotted 10 seconds (multiple shots may be taken). That set up freshman Lily Schoonmaker who scored and the celebration was on!

The Quakers will face Mamaroneck, who beat Scarsdale 2-0 Monday night. If they can win Wednesday, box #3 will be checked and would be the first Section 1 title first time since 1984.
Come cheer on the Quakers Wednesday, 3:00pm at Pace University!
September 2017: Grant and Potter In LoHud Field Hockey's Elite 11; Graham in Second 11
Seniors Fiona Grant (Def.) and Nikki Potter (Mid.) were selected as members of the Journal News Field Hockey Elite 11 for 2017. Only perennial power Lakeland placed more players (3) on this honor roll.
Fellow senior Katie Graham was also honored as part of the publication's "Second 11." Congrats to all!

October 25th: Field Hockey Blasts Ursuline 9-0; Host Suffern in QF
Greeley Field Hockey demonstrated why they are a high seed, dominating the Ursuline School 9-0 under the lights on the Contest Field this evening.
Lauren Neff started the scoring. Then, Fiona Grant got the first of two. After a 2-0 halftime lead, the floodgates opened with Lily Schoonmaker scoring two, Nikki Potter scoring off of a penalty stroke, and then Katie Graham, Sophie Berkowitz and senior Laura Perlmutter rounding out the 9-0 HG win, scoring her first Greeley goal. Willa Kuhn had two saves and then Dagney Marks jumped into the cage to complete the shutout.
The team will be right back in action Thursday at 4:15pm on the Contest Field against #7 seeded Suffern. The Mounties defeated White Plains to advance to play the Quakers.
October 26th: Field Hockey Gets By Suffern 1-0, Hosts Fox Lane in Sectional Semifinal Monday
In its quarterfinal matchup, the #2 seeded Greeley Field Hockey team ran into a determined #7 seed, Suffern, with a very clever game plan: Stuff 10 players in the middle, 'the box,' bend but don't break, and then counterattack.
Despite Suffern being outshot 15-2 and corners being 14-2 in Greeley's favor, it made for a real nail biter. An early goal off a fabulous behind the back pass by freshman sensation Lily Schoonmaker to Katie Graham stood up for the 1-0 HG victory. Star midfielder Nikki Potter and wing defenders Katie Jakacki and Sophia Rutman and sweeper Rosalee Bayer helped control the action but nothing was settled until the final horn went off.
With the win, Greeley advances to play Fox Lane on Monday at 4:15 on Contest Field in the Semifinals. Greeley and Fox Lane played twice during the regular season: a 4-4 tie on turf at Fox Lane and a 2-0 win for Greeley on its grass. Last year, Fox Lane beat Greeley for the League title and then played again in the playoffs when HG got revenge. A year later, HG won the League title and Fox Lane will be gunning for revenge to earn a spot in the finals (Wed. 11/1, 3pm) versus either Mamaroneck or Scarsdale.
